Our river guide James Shinas and his dad, Jim, built their own plane.

James writes:

“In may of 2007 my dad (Jim Shinas) and I started building an experimental aircraft in our 2 car garage in White Rock. 4 years and 2400 hours later I flew it for the first time on July 22nd 2011. Here is a short video of the flight.”

Guide Training Program May 2011

Our Spring Guide Training Program had 10 participants looking to gain whitewater safety skills and learn to navigate rapids. All footage was shot over 4 days on the Race Course Section of the Rio Grande River just South of Taos, New Mexico. To a look.

New Wave Rafting Co. acquires nifty 2006 Ford 15-passenger van

We chose to spend $13,000 on a great van, instead of insuring our bus fleet for $11,000. If an $11,000 premium doesn’t seem expensive (and excessive) to you, it does to us. The State of New Mexico newly requires us to obtain coverage in the amount of $5,000,000 on buses, hence that outrageous premium. So, for this summer at least, our customers will be riding to and from their Rio Grande river white water raft trips in air-conditioned vans only.

New Wave Gets New Mexico Movie Work

As can be seen on our website, we’ve done much movie work in the past, including “Lonesome Dove”, “Natural Born Killers”, “The Missing” and more. We’ve provided river transport, river safety and other services for film production companies when they’re filming on and along rivers. We’ve just completed an assignment for the filming of an NBC series pilot, called “Reconstruction”. One location was on the Rio Grande river, at Santa Clara Pueblo. This location required our providing access to a small island, along with river safety services. We built a raft bridge to the island, and on the day of the shoot, we had both a safety kayaker and guides stationed downstream with throw ropes. One shot consisted of an actor walking into the river, committing suicide. Our kayaker, Atom Crawford, chased down his period hat, while our guides (Ben Rainchild, Karen House and Mike Boren) threw the ropes. It was acknowledged that our raft bridge greatly expedited the filming effort. We also provided raft transport for another location, on the Pecos River. where the river was just barely deep enough to float our raft over the rocks. Scuba diving River Guides

Owners of New Wave Rafting Co Kathy and Steve Miller were joined by Operations Manager Britt Huggins and guide CJ Robison for a dive trip to Bonaire, in January. Gotta love corals reefs and all that undersea life!

New Wave Rafting guides run the Rogue River, Oregon

New Wave Rafting Co. owners Kathy and Steve Miller, along with Operations Manager Britt Huggins, took a busman’s holiday in September, and traveled to Oregon to run the famous Rogue River. It was beautiful, and had lots of fun whitewater. We took 5 days to do the run.

New Wave Rafting Co. enjoys an enviable riverside location. Our picnic area is shaded by colossal cottonwood trees, and bordered by willows. Songbirds serenade us from the branches above, while the mighty Rio Grande rolls on by. You couldn’t ask for a nicer spot to eat a hearty chuckwagon lunch, which included barbecued steak, baked potatoes, cole slaw, beans, biscuits, and peach cobbler. The cobbler and other items were cooked in dutch ovens, over charcoal. The lunch was catered by Hawkins Chuckwagon, of Santa Fe, and was part of an outing arranged by our partners, Santa Fe Mountain Adventures. After lunch, the 28 guests floated through the Orilla Verde Recreation Area with New Wave. The weather was perfect, of course.
