Abiquiu is a town on the Rio Chama, 53 miles northwest of Santa Fe. The painter Georgia O’Keefe made her home there. Her paintings are based on the unusual scenery found nearby. Two such locales are Echo Amphitheater and Plaza Blanca. Indian ruins are found in the area. Abiquiu Lake, a reservoir, provides good boating and fishing. There are a number of scenic and interesting sites in the area. Ghost Ranch is an education and retreat center. Christ of the Desert Monastery is located on the Rio Chama. Dar al Islam is an Islamic center located near Plaza Blanca. Another attraction is the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm. Abiquiu enjoys good weather, sitting at an elevation of 6,080′.
